ROOKWOOD POTTERY

rookwood pottery paperweightFrom a distance, this vintage 1937 Rookwood pottery paperweight in the shape of two bunny rabbits is so nondescript that the average eye would pass by without notice. Upon closer inspection, the dull brown-looking color is actually a rich, earthy brown / red glaze with a gorgeous glittery sheen from the minerals in the slip glaze. The piece is marked with the RP stamp, 14 flames and the Roman numeral 37, below that are the numbers 6643. The item is in mint, flawless condition with no chips, cracks, crazing, scuffs or scratches and measures 3 1/8 inches tall. rookwood rabbit paperweightIt turned out to be one of the most unexpected treasures we have found. Starting the bidding at $70 (a very fair price for the common white glaze single rabbit paperweight from the same year), we were a bit shocked when we received our first buy it now offer the next morning for $300. Bidding was already into the low $100s when we received our second offer to end the auction for $900. At this point, the auction was over in a few days, and, needless to say, we were freaking out a little. The day before auction end, we received a buy it now offer of $1,500. Now we’re sweating bullets, because the auction is stalled at around $1000. We decided to let it play out, and the last second winning bid was $2,115.00! To this day, we have no clue exactly why this paperweight went for so much money. Perhaps it was the deceptively dull brown glaze, which we could not find other examples of. Perhaps it was the fact that the statue was of two rabbits instead of one. Maybe Jasper Johns made it. Maybe people just really love rabbits!

Is Rookwood Pottery a Good Investment?

In any case, Rookwood Pottery is always a great investment, no matter what it is. rookwood markThis rabbit was made after Rookwood was hit hard by the depression, probably manufactured during a time when the factory was only operating one week per month. Despite the hard times, the artists never wavered in their commitment to aesthetic beauty and quality craftsmanship. You can see and feel the quality and history each time you handle a piece of Rookwood Pottery, and though these hares are sold, you can check below for more fine examples of this classic Arts & Crafts American Pottery.
