This Scientific Audio Electronics SAE 5000A Impulse Noise Reduction System is designed to remove pops and scratches in vinyl records during playback. The SAE 5000A measures 10 3/4 inches x 8 3/8 inches x 3 inches and is comprised of a textured black aluminum casing with solid walnut side panels and a black anodized brushed aluminum face. Manufactured by Scientific Audio Electronics of Los Angeles, California, this is an upgrade to the original SAE 5000, and this particular unit has a date code of March, 1980. The SAE 5000A is deceivingly simple to operate, but if you are not familiar with it, connecting and operating it can be a daunting task.

You can find downloadable copies of the instruction manual on the internet, and I highly recommend you read it before attempting to operate this unit. I wasted plenty of time with this device before finally downloading the manual, which is both highly detailed and easy to understand. The three buttons on the front allow you to toggle between a processed signal and a bypassed unfiltered signal, and the Invert button allows you to truly hear the SAE 5000A in action by isolating only the pops and noises it removes during playback. The slider button adjusts the noise reduction sensitivity level. It is designed to remove "impulse noise", meaning sudden noises like pops and scratches on a record, but is not specifically designed to remove hiss and static from tapes or heavy constant noise from very dirty records. The SAE 5000A can be connected between your turntable preamp or tape deck and your receiver, but the sensitivity levels will need to be adjusted every time you change the volume on your stereo. However, this is just fine if you are using it for mixing / mastering and to transfer analog signals to digital. For everyday home use, it is designed to connect through your stereo receiver's tape monitor loop. This is the manufacturer's recommended setup, as it allows the 5000A to be used with all your peripheral audio gear without the need for constant adjustment during volume changes. The SAE 500A is very simple to operate once you understand its basic functions. There is no power on / off control, and the unit powers on automatically when plugged in, so it should be connected to your receiver's switched outlet or stay unplugged when not in use.
