The Thorens Turntable
The Thorens turntable model TD-124 from 1957 and the Thorens TD-124 Mk II from 1966 were the top of the line in their day. Like a well-built classic car, these Swiss-made masterpieces of audio engineering are still of better quality than over 99% of modern turntables. So far, we have located one of each of these amazing pieces of Hi-Fi in our endless search for awesome vintage electronics. We also found a Thorens TD-150 Mk II from 1970, which might just be the best belt-drive turntable you'll ever use.
Thorens TD-124 Mk II
This Thorens turntable model TD-124 Mk II was taken out of a gigantic custom-made console stereo cabinet that had but one owner since purchased in the mid-60's. This console stereo had a Scott Stereomaster tube amp, an early Sansui TU-70 tube tuner, and an absolutely amazing pair of gold Jensen 2-way speakers, all in the most fabulous and quintessential Mid-Century Modern cabinetry and upholstry.
The Thorens TD-124 Mk II was complete with an Ortofon-made ESL S-1000 or S-2000 tonearm with ESL headshell and an old Shure cartridge and stylus. There was even this really cool Robins brand record dust brush attached to the headshell.
The tonearm had been mounted on a stained and lacquered tonearm board that matched the wood underneath. This platform rested on foam covered wood brackets in the original cabinet (and it has a cool blank brass nameplate that wasn't engraved!). This Thorens TD-124 was still in excellent condition and was very well-cared-for. All we did was some fine detail cleaning and it looked as good as new.
The unbeliebably heavy platter of the Thorens TD-124 Mk II slowly lurched to life when the chunky switch was flipped to 33RPM speed, and it had typically impeccable timing with not even a hint of audible drag or inconsistency in speed. Unfortunately, there was a faint ticking or knocking sound that seemed to coincide with the rotation speed of the turntable. It was, apparently, a minor problem, because we sold this Thorens TD-124 Mk II at lightning speed. It now lives a happy life somewhere in British Columbia, Canada. Thorens TD-124
This legendary Thorens turntable model TD-124 is a standalone unit, mounted in its original factory-made plinth with an acrylic dust cover that was likely hand-crafted by the previous owner. It includes a fabulous Grado Laboratory Series walnut wood tonearm, which originally came with this turntable, and is one of the prettiest tonearms you will ever lay eyes on. Mounted in the headshell area is a Shure M95ED Hi-Track cartridge with flip-down stylus guard. Unfortunately, the previous owner chose to disregard this feature at the wrong time, and the stylus is now broken off. Also included is the original 24 page instruction manual, which reads a lot like an automobile owners manual, providing highly detailed information on how to properly play the TD-124, numerous maintenence, repair and upkeep tips and techniques, as well as a full illustrated breakdown of all the parts that make up this classic turntable. This Thorens TD-124 was found in excellent cosmetic condition, showing barely a scratch on the cream-colored surface of the unit. The turntable was fully tested (using a cartridge and stylus from another turntable). Everything works properly, records play at the proper speed, the orange lighted stroboscope holds steady at all speeds from 16 to 78 rpm. The motor starts up and reaches proper speed fairly fast, despite the ridiculously heavy cast iron platter, and when switched off, the platter just spins and spins for over a minute before finally coming to a halt (which is, of course, the desired effect and a good sign that your Thorens TD-124 is in healthy condition).
This is truly an amazing piece of Swiss-Made machinery.
Thorens TD-150 Mk II
This Thorens Turntable model TD-150 Mk II was manufactured around 1970 and still ran great when we rescued it out of a dusty pile of electric typewriters and VCRs.
It included a used, but working, Stanton 500 Gold cartridge & stylus. The Thorens TD-150 Mk II turntable has a massive two-piece platter similar to other classic Thorens models, and each piece is heavy enough to make for a deadly improvised projectile. The Thorens TD-150 Mk II has a no-frills design and is completely manual, which makes it a great turntable for DJs, radio stations, and people who really love to "play" records.
This TD-150 was filthy when we found it, but after a couple of hours of meticulous cleaning, it wound up in very good cosmetic condition, with only a couple of minor scratches and a few minor dings in the plinth veneer. The "33" was partially rubbed off of the brushed aluminum surface, and the aluminum tonearm lift had a few nicks in the top surface.
It was also missing a couple of small pieces, including the small front ball counterweight on the original kugelarm, and the pendulum-style anti-skate counterweight and thread. We attached a replacement counterweight with a thin piece of nylon line and found that the turntable played just fine, even without the small forward counterweight. The minor issues aside, we never even had the chance to clean off shelf space to store this Thorens TD-150 Mk II before it sold and was shipped to South Korea!
We are always on the hunt for the elusive Thorens Turntable, and we will continue to update this page whenever we locate a different model.
