ZENITH CIRCLE OF SOUND SPEAKERS
This super-stylish pair of vintage Zenith Circle of Sound speakers are circa 1968 Eames-Era space age round cylinder canister-type speakers with vertically facing 6 inch woofers and bright white plastic cones that are designed to radiate the sound outward 360 degrees. These “modular stereo” speakers were part of the visually stunning line of Circle of Sound audio products. Zenith made turntables, clock radios, receivers, etc with this “cutting edge” technology (“Imagine Stereo that lets you sit where you want. Move where you want. Look the other way, if you want!”). You might as well call it a primitive 1968 version of Bose Wave Radio technology! These Zenith Circle of Sound speakers came as a part of the Zenith Troubador Z590 system. Obviously not audiophile quality, but they do sound surprisingly clear for their novelty look and lack of a separate tweeter. Standard speaker wire with phono/rca plugs is built-in, which makes us think these speakers were never sold separately outside of a complete system. The outer dimensions are 13 3/8 inches tall and 10 1/8 inches in diameter. This particular pair was meticulously cleaned, with bright white cones showing no yellowing or discoloration, and no serious cosmetic damage. There were a few minor scuffs in the dark wood veneer and some minor pitting in the chrome-finish legs, but overall they were still in beautiful condition for their age. A visually appealing example of vintage electronics, we sold these Circle of Sound speakers (which are now living a happy new life in Italy!), but you can still find Zenith Circle of Sound speakers on eBay, so check the links below for plenty of cool modernist Space Odyssey-inspired Zenith Circle of Sound products, and scroll down for more weird and funky Space Age Speakers in our collection!

Realistic MC-900 Round Speakers

This pair of vintage Realistic MC-900 round speakers have classic 1970s Space Age style. These indoor / outdoor speakers have tan plastic cylindrical cabinets with textured plastic coated flat tops. They were probably meant to double as patio end tables, as the cleanable tops would be perfect for sitting a drink and ashtray on without damaging the speakers in any way. Each MC-900 is apparently equipped with a 2-way 6.5-inch speaker. I say apparently, because I can't see how to get to the speaker without ripping out the permanently glued fabric grill covers, but I measured the best I could, and I believe they are 6.5's. They must be some sort of 2-way speaker, too, because these speakers deliver a perfect blend of lows, mids and highs. Each speaker is rated at 50 watts, which is a bit more than I would expect from a "novelty" speaker. They don't sound like novelty speakers, either. They have a sufficient amount of bass and depth, and the omni-directional cone attached to the base helps the sound eminate in all directions (just like the old Zenith Circle of Sound speakers!). The MC-900 has a standard spring-loaded crossover connections and are easily installed in any existing stereo system. Each cabinet measures 17.5 inches tall and is 13 inches in diameter at the base. Assembled in the USA!
