The Lasonic TRC-931 Boombox

The Lasonic TRC-931 boombox is truly the undisputed heavyweight champion of boomboxes. With two 8-inch woofers and an abundance of bells and whistles, its sheer size dwarfs the Magnavox and Emerson boomboxes I had when I was a kid.  A friend in middle school brought his Lasonic TRC-931 on a field trip, which I believe was the very first time I experienced the emotion of jealousy. I can still remember riding that school bus and listening to the holy trinity of 13-year-olds...the Fat Boys, the Beastie Boys, and Run DMC.

The Lasonic TRC-931 is a genuine icon of 1980's pop culture, and its over-the-top styling and design have made it among the most popular boombox models of all time.

Made in Taiwan by the Yung Fu Technology Electrical Corporation and manufactured between around 1985 and just into the first year or two of the 1990's, there are three basic versions of the Lasonic TRC-931. They all look very similar, except the last version, which has rounded corners. The one shown here is the second version. It has a sleek and expensive look with a glossy black finish and shiny chrome silver accents and controls. Features of the Lasonic TRC-931 include a five band graphic equalizer, stereo mic inputs with separate level controls, and picks up AM, FM, and shortwave radio bands with two separate telescoping antennas.
